Never Listless
The Top 3 of almost Everything

Hello and welcome to your weekly dose of all things 3ology …

This week it’s a whistle stop tour through my 2nd brain, local tapas, Lennon’s teeth, women in tech and what the Gen Z expect of you as a neighbour …

Plus the sight of our Alan sinking beneath a tsunami of scorecards.

All this and more in Never Listless #5.

My Weekly Top 3

1. The Second Brain

My biology teacher, often sozzled and always cynical, had a series of well rehearsed put downs he used in vain to control a classroom of Cornish oiks.

One favourite was the far from original … “If you had half a brain, you’d be dangerous”

One day I become a focal point of his resentment when he doubled down by suggesting If Only I Had A Brain from Wizard of Oz, was worth a listen …
“just in case you recognise Scarecrow as a member of your own family”

This week, a very bright colleague, built my Second Brain, a concept that lifts me to exciting new levels of productivity and the thought that …
“with two brains, I am dangerous”

2. Noble Cling Film

This week’s Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen, who helped turn Antarctic ice into a detector for near-invisible particles from distant galaxies.

I’m constantly amazed by our achievements as a species, from the everyday magic of keeping planes in the air to our latest Nobel Laureate spotting a neutrino beneath the South Pole.

All of this and yet I still can’t fathom an efficient way to extract cling film from the roll.

3. Tapas Paradise

With a Spanish wife and six years in Madrid, my expectations of local tapas restaurants have transformed from the days of meekly accepting microwaved chorizo, frozen croquetas and counterfeit Padrón peppers.

That flamenco soundtrack will no longer disguise the paucity of your rubbery micro prawns.

Which is why we love getting a taste of El Mercado de San Miguel in the heart of London with restaurants like Barrafina, where this week I was able to treat a wonderful old friend to a fine birthday lunch. Definite recommendation.

Top 3 “Quirky” Beatles Auction Sales

I’ve been a fan of the journalist David Hepworth for many years and in particular his joyful capacity for delving into the deepest of musical rabbit holes.

”Word in your Ear” is the music podcast he has been co-hosting for 20 years and which this week interviewed Gary Kemp about a quirky piece of Beatles memorabilia the ex-spandau ballet man purchased at auction and subsequently turned a book.

Lennon’s Strawberry Fields piano might have fetched $3.25m this year at auction but I’m more interested in quirkier items and so … here’s my Top 3.

1. Brian Epstein’s Address Book

Gary Kemp bought Epstein’s 1967 address book at Sotheby’s for £10,400 and turned this treasure trove of 404 names, from Mick Jagger to the shadier corners of Swinging London. into a book The World of Brian Epstein and The Beatles.

Kemp tells the story on Word In Your Ear.

2. John Lennon’s Molar

Lennon gave his molar to a housekeeper in the 1960s and somehow it made its way into the hands of a Canadian dentist in 2011 who gained ownership for £20,000, hoping to extract the DNA, that would clone a Lennon and be raised as his son.

And you thought Laurence Olivier was an epitome of the crazed dentist?

3. Paul McCartney’s Debit Card

Autograph hunters will proffer many a strange object if given an unexpected opportunity to gain that precious signature.

When a fan met Paul in 1968 with nothing for him to sign, he signed and handed over an old Diners Club card which by 2025 was capable of generating $9,800 at auction.

That’s close to the amount of interest I’ve paid credit card companies for late payments.

Top 3 Trailblazing Women in Tech

Margaret Hamilton’s death was announced last week, quite a coincidence as this week we celebrate Ada Lovelace Day.

With Tech Bros dominating a sector still woefully imbalanced towards men - particulalry in senior roles - time to celebrate my Top 3 trailblazing women in tech …

1. Margaret Hamilton
She led the MIT team behind Apollo’s flight software.
As Apollo 11 descended, its computer overloaded; the software dropped less urgent tasks and kept the landing on course.
She gave software engineering its name, then received a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Lego minifigure. In that order.

2. Ada Lovelace

The daughter of Lord Byron who published an algorithm in 1843 for Charles Babbage’s still-unbuilt computer.

She also imagined such machines handling symbols and even composing music.

The hardware took rather longer to catch up to Ada.

3. Grace Hopper

Grace pioneered compilers and helped develop COBOL.

Her team also taped a moth found in the Harvard Mark II computer into its logbook: a rare bug report with a bug actually attached.

3ology in person …

This week we took 3ology on the road to test an in-person version.

It was a great success with six teams battling out for the inaugural 3ology Quiz Trophy.

We took elements from the board game - mixing up our fact and choice cards to produce such gems as the Top 3 …

Snow White dwarfs (Dopey, Sleepy, Grumpy)
De Niro films (Godfather Part II, Godfather Part III, Raging Bull)
and a Gen Z contribution to the Top 3 Things a Good Neighbour Does …

Let me have parties
Water the plants
Say Hi

If you have a Gen Z neighbour, remember to always say Hi … even after a loud party!

Meanwhile Alan was slowly disappearing beneath the manual scoring system I devised for the pilot.

Whilst the event was a great success, it’s clear that like much else these days, for the next one we will be replacing Alan with technology.
