Never Listless
The Top 3 of almost Everything

Yes, it’s been a while, so I’ll start with some housekeeping…

You’re receiving this new edition of our Never Listless newsletter because at some point in the recent past you …

As long-suffering friend and/or family member you were coerced into supporting 3ology
Backed our Kickstarter campaign back in the day.
Purchased 3ology without realising there would be this added benefit.
Have absolutely no idea how you got here and would like to get out pdq.

Now, having just relaunched the 3ology website we thought it a great time to revive the newsletter, and your regular dose of Top 3 lists.

However, if you’ve moved on and would prefer NOT to receive anything further from us then you can unsubscribe (see footer) and forget this incident ever happened.

BUT for those willing to stay and enjoy/endure …
welcome back to Never Listless — The Top 3 of Almost Everything and your semi-regular collection of Top 3 lists and 3ology updates.

My Weekly Top 3

1. Arcadia — Spent the summer reading Hermione Lee’s fantastic biography of Tom Stoppard, fell in love with the man and wanted to revisit his work. By coincidence, Arcadia was in the West End, so I strapped in for three hours of thermodynamics, chaos theory, algorithms, Lord Byron, landscape gardening and sex. Alas, a warm theatre, long work day and excessive cleverness left my intellectual aspirations scattered along St Martin’s Lane as my tired brain beat a hasty retreat out of Theatreland. Still love the man. Not sure I’ll be returning to his work.

2. Mounjaro — There seems to be some embarrassment about admitting to weight-loss drugs, but I’m all-in and here to celebrate my entry into the world of Mounjaro. A small health issue requires some urgent weight loss and, having seen the astonishing results achieved by a pal, I’ve decided to join the party. And it’s remarkable how quickly the appetite — particularly that dangerous snacking appetite — gets neutered. Early days, but expect to see less of me very soon. If interested in the phenomenon then here’s a Podcast on “What’s next in weight loss drugs”

3. September — Perhaps it’s the English school calendar that still conditions me, but I’ve always thought that September feels more like a new beginning than January. Holidays over. Weather turning. New class, new routines, new plans. Summer has closed down for the year, let the next chapter begin .….

Top 3 AI features you might not be using

Much frenzied debate this week following Anthropic’s messaging about our impending AI doom. I am taking the Corporal Jones approach to these pronouncements and focusing for now on the positives and my recent discovery of some features you might find useful …

1. PROJECTS — Give your AI a memory for the job

If you repeatedly use AI for the same area of work, stop starting from a blank chat. A Project lets you keep related chats, files and instructions together so the AI has the context it needs from the outset. In ChatGPT, Projects are designed for ongoing work such as writing, research and planning; Claude offers a similar workspace with its own knowledge base and project instructions.

Why it helps: less repetition, more context, better continuity.

2. CONNECTIONS — Let AI go to the information

Instead of constantly downloading files, copying text and re-uploading it, connect ChatGPT to services you already use. Depending on the app and your permissions, it can search connected information, bring relevant context into a conversation and sometimes complete approved actions.

Why it helps: less admin, fewer stale copies, and AI working closer to where your real information already lives.

3. DEEP RESEARCH — Make it investigate, not just answer

For anything important, switch from normal chat to Deep Research in ChatGPT or Research in Claude. These modes conduct multiple searches, follow questions as they emerge, compare evidence and return an answer with sources you can check.

Why it helps: better for decisions, comparisons and evidence-based work than a quick one-shot answer.

Top 3 Tom Hanks Films by Tom Hanks

During recent trips to Australia and Japan I consumed pretty much the entire Etihad movie collection including multiple Tom Hanks films (Apollo 13, Forrest Gump and Sully for the record) which is why, I was interested to discover that Tom Hanks himself, has chosen his Top 3 Tom Hanks films, though selected on the basis of … “the personal experience that I had when I was doing them.”

1. A League of Their Own .. he basically spent the summer playing baseball. I can see how that would make the list.

2. Cast Away … Filming in Fiji with his family and having what he described as “bold adventures.” doesn’t give much away but it makes his list.

3. Cloud Atlas … tbh, had never heard of it until Hanks added it to his list. I’ll wait for my next long hail to catch up on this one.

And finally … a small plug for 3ology
