Never Listless
The Top 3 of almost Everything

This week …

A poker game where I didn’t lose my shirt,
Michael takes Paul’s advice rather too literally,
and Nasty Nick is an innocent by modern standards.

Also a moment of gratitude for finding work you love,
and in the week of World Polio Day, my top 3 remarkable survivors.

Welcome to Never Listless #6.

My Weekly Top 3

1. Poker Home

My only teenage game of strip poker soon left me in my underpants whilst those canny girls managed to include their jewellery as clothing and barely removed a sock.

As for the Vegas variety, I’ve never had patience for all their noise and hullabaloo.

So this week’s neighbourly poker game of low stakes and high incompetence felt much more my level. I left defeated but without needing to mortgage the house or reveal my days-of-the-week undercrackers.

2. Betrayal Brothers (spoiler alert)

You won’t often find James Acaster and Donald Trump in the same paragraph, but this week I spotted a shared instinct: self-preservation.

James sacrificed “Smart Hannah” to try and survive in the Celebrity Traitors.
Donald sacrificed Ukraine to try and survive in the midterms.

I suspect only one lost sleep over it.

The other seems guided by a mantra attributed to one of his leadership heroes, Joe Stalin: “One death is a tragedy; a million is a statistic.”

3. Intrinsic Motivation

In the startup life that seemed to chose me, an important element of success is understanding your core values and from that finding your intrinsic motivation, without which you’ll struggle to get through the many challenging days.

It took me a long and peripatetic journey to align day job and intrinsic motivation, but as we waved off the latest CTO Academy graduates last week, with praise ringing in our ears, I did get the shot of extreme satisfaction.

In a business world of smoke and mirrors, delivering great value with real integrity is deeply satisfying and allowed me to indulge in a small “pat on my own back”.

Top 3 entertainment betrayals

Let’s run with a theme and needing to avoid the obvious historical candidates of Judas, Arnold and Figo, I’m focusing instead on a Top 3 list of betrayals in the world of entertainment;

1. Michael buys his mates songs

Paul McCartney explained the rewards of music publishing so effectively to his pal Michael Jackson, that in 1985 Michael paid $47.5 million to snaffle publishing rights to the Lennon–McCartney song catalogue, right under Paul’s nose.

It’s always satisfying when a friend takes your advice.
Less so when he sneakily buys Hey Jude.

2. Warner Brother

Jack Warner persuaded brothers Harry and Albert to join him in selling their stakes in Warner Bros.

He neglected to mention a secret arrangement with the buyers that allowed him to buy back in and take control.

The corporate name survived because “Warner & His Pissed-Off Brothers” wouldn’t fit around the water tower.

3. Nasty Nick

When Nick Bateman was thrown out of Big Brother for trying to influence nominations.

Britain reacted as though he’d sold our nuclear secrets. 26 years later he’d have his own turret ….

Top 3 remarkable survivors of polio

Next Saturday is World Polio Day. Before vaccines, polio could leave children permanently paralysed, needing leg braces or confined to an “iron lung” that helped them breathe. Some never came home. Vaccination has dramatically reduced its impact, but the disease hasn’t disappeared.

These three survivors helped shape politics, sport and music.

1. Franklin Roosevelt

Diagnosed with polio at 39, he never regained the ability to walk unaided.

Went on to win four presidential elections, lead America through the Great Depression and most of the Second World War, with his public appearances carefully managed to conceal the extent of his disability.

Whilst we’ve suffered 10 years of the wrong leaders, at the wrong time.
Great men sometimes do arrive at just the right time.

2. Wilma Rudolph

Childhood polio left her needing a leg brace. At the 1960 Rome Olympics, she won the 100m, 200m and 4×100m relay—the first American woman to win three gold medals at a single Games.

From struggling to walk to the fastest woman in the world, is quite the journey.

3. Ian Dury

Polio at seven permanently damaged his left arm and leg but didn’t stop him becoming one of the UK’s most distinctive pop stars with a unique and rarely matched lyricism running through his records.

Anyone unfamiliar with his oeuvre should immediately stop what they’re doing and take a listen to his vaudeville world play on New Boots and Panties.

3ology - anyone know Henrietta?

During our summer promotional tour of Primrose Hill we met a sunbathing Henrietta who, whilst briefly wearing her Selfridges director of buying, seemed to take a keen interest in 3ology.

Alas she is yet to put in that first big order but …. if you happen to know Henrietta or indeed anyone involved in buying, distributing or generally influencing around board games and games in general, then we’d love an introduction.

A recommendation will be great; opening a door even better.

Even a share of our lovely game on Linkedin and/or Instagram will be warmly appreciated.

Yes, I chose this Startup life and so I know the importance of having a little luck (alongside the intrinsic motivation!).
